Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same.


And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back..

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

金色树林中两条岔路,
留给行人遗憾深深。
不能都踏上,久久站住,
顺着一条路放眼望去,
看它没入树木丛中。

挑选另一条,同样美丽,
也许因为这个原因,
它诱人步入芳草萋萋,
尽管两条路相差无几,
没有行人走过痕印。

那个清晨那两条路面,
一样落叶无人踏踩。
哦,未行路留待他年,
虽然我知道前途漫漫,
此去可能不再回来。

我将因此叹息着诉说
年复一年某时某地:
树林中两条岔路,而我——
我选择了荒凉的那个,
所有不同由此而起。

译后记:
1、这是弗洛斯特最有名的作品,译者众多,在网上搜了一下,把一些名家之译放在楼下,以供比较,其中顾子欣译进了初中一年级语文课(最不能原谅顾译最后一句的处理,破坏了全诗象征的统一)。
2、格律体新诗理论是翻译西方格律诗的利器。我的翻译若有进步,概因其他译者没有掌握新诗格律理论。一是韵脚,原作abaab,韵脚要是都翻译不出来,可以PASS了;二是音步,原作音步多为4步和5步(不知道是不是特殊的格律),翻译时采用四步,为突出原诗沉思的基调和韵脚的特点,每节一、三、四行用九字四步,二、五行用八字四步,句式略作收缩;三是平仄调理,除了少数行,都调理了平仄,以求朗诵声音和谐(逐明老师要是有兴趣,可替我修改平仄不顺之处),译诗的第三节声韵我最满意;四是遵循孙逐明老师大顿对称的理论要求,大顿都落在行中四字或五字处。
3、本诗翻译的难点是第二节。第一个难点是 “as just as fair”到底是什么意思,一些译作干脆略过不译,我以为fair双关,既有公平合理又有美丽之意,以前者为主,但这个双关翻译不出来;第二个难点是第二节最后两行,原作这两行不好,用语松垮,意思含糊,对这两行的翻译众译作也是差别最大。
4、“Because it was grassy and wanted wear”(直译:因为它长满草想被踩),“我”选择了第二条路,就是因为这个原因。雪地总是诱人去踩,草地也是一样,特别是没人踩过的雪地和草地。
