诗酒自娱

歌曲作于六十年代末，是奥斯卡奖影片《毕业生》（THE Gradute，1967）的插曲之一，联系当时越战的时代背景，不难领会歌曲的内涵。

歌曲作者保罗.西蒙是六、七十年代青年的代言人。他曾在英国修习英国文学，文学底蕴深厚，因而其歌词文字意境深邃。歌词改编自一首十七世纪英格兰民谣。在演唱上西蒙和加丰科（加奋克尔）的配合可谓天衣无缝。

这首歌的男声版，就是美国歌手保罗·西蒙在英国时从卡西那里学会了这首歌之后，再创造性地把自己写的一首反战歌曲《山坡上》（The Side Of A Hill）作为副歌和这首歌混在一起，用对比的手法表达了对和平的渴望。加芬克尔为副歌作了曲，成为歌中的“颂歌”部分。

保罗·西蒙和加奋克尔唱得温柔，怀旧，凄美，轻盈，色彩浓郁。他们用沉思在努力回忆一件件旧事，并且舒缓从容地述说着。背景里有森林、花草、坟墓上的露珠以及正在凉下来的发亮的枪管。

你似乎看见一个在战争中死去的青年，他的灵魂面对世界，在悲泣，在轻诉。 他思念那朝思暮想的家乡，可是他再也不能与心上人一同享受生活的甘甜和琐碎的日子了。

歌曲里缓慢悠闲的低八度旋律，只靠单吉它的细碎伴奏，早晨般清纯自然的声线，如一阕初秋的小令，精致、散逸。更如一声声轻柔、舒长、真切的叹息，沁透着淡淡的忧愁，浅浅的感伤。歌者小小心心吐着词，抒着情，仿佛一不小心便会碰坏了什么。真轻啊，就是“生命中不能承受的轻”！

听歌重在听“歌眼”，正如文章里的“文眼”。这首歌的歌眼就是“芜荽,鼠尾草,迷迭香和百里香”，歌者在Sage与Thyme上有意延长似乎是在提醒我们注意：Sage既指鼠尾草，同时又有“贤明/圣哲”之意；而Thyme则与Time谐音。让我们再度回头审视歌名（注意：歌词与衬词中都及可能潜藏着歌眼），原本熟悉的歌名似乎也变了面目：Scar-Borrow-Fair。伤口、伤痛（Scar）与公正（Fair）昭示了歌者的本意，呼唤和平，反战的倾向。
